A bolt is a type of threaded fastener that is used to make bolted joints. Bolts come with external threads that are positioned or released with a nut. Bolts have three parts, the head, shank, and chamfer. A bolt must always be used with a nut to fix parts on the bolt's axis. The nut is applied using torque while the bolt itself is held in place. The nut applies the clamping force, and the shank serves as a fastener that prevents lateral pressure from displacing the bolt.
