Hanson forms one of the bedrocks of construction materials manufacturers. The company’s UK unit has four distinct lines of products that are aggregates, concrete, cement and asphalt and contracting. Hanson is part of the international Heidelberg Cement group, market leaders in the above products. First established in 1964 as the Hanson Trust, it was in 2002, that the Hanson brand was exclusively formed for household building material business and in 2015, it was wholly acquired by Lone Star Funds, a private equity investor from the USA. Hanson headquarters are at Maidenhead, UK and it has 2300 centres worldwide in more than 40 countries. Building materials such as crushed rock, gravel and sand, asphalt, concrete and cement are the very vital components of any construction and can never be compromised for quality. Hanson is one of the top companies that produce these aggregates and is the number one choice of builders.
The company began its activities with diverse interests that included gold mining, toys, timber, batteries, cod liver oil capsules and chemicals across different continents. However, within a few decades aggregates soon became the company’s core business and this was further strengthened in 2002, when Hanson acquired several other allied houses, like Thermalite, Structherm, Redbank and Marshalls Clay Products. Today, the company is one of the largest suppliers of heavy building materials to the construction industry, chiefly in the UK and Wales.
Hanson has its own quarries across the country, many located conveniently close to business districts for easy transportation and to ensure lower operation costs. Keeping this in mind, it owns wharfs and depots with access to rail and road for quick distribution and to reach areas that are short of such products. The company also has its own fleet of more than 1200 vehicles that has about 800 tippers, as well as franchise driver-operators and its own rail business with four locomotives and more than 140 wagons.
Hanson uses only premium raw materials, and these are processed to provide value products, such as –
Asphalt for road surfacing: made from sand and crushed rock that is mixed with bitumen.
Ready-mixed Concrete: this is prepared by mixing cement with sand, limestone and gravel.
Handy Bags: cement and aggregates are specially packed in handy bags for easy pick-up by masons and DIY practitioners.
Hanson also provides the following products – Bath & Portland Stone: a range of manufactured and processed Portland and bath stones are available in this segment.
