Hard Hats and Helmets

Injuries to the head due to falling objects or bumps can be fatal or extremely severe. A Hard Hat or a Helmet is part of Personal Protective Clothing (PPE) designed to protect the head from falling objects, impacts, and other kinds of head injury or trauma. It also offers safety to the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. Hard hats and Helmets are different from bump caps that do not provide sufficient protection from high-impact blows or protection from falling objects.

Hard hats are built differently so as to offer protection against specific hazards. These safety equipment are mainly of two types, one type is designed for protecting the top of the head and the other is a cap-like hat that protects the entire head including the sides. Some hard hats also provide protection against electrical hazards while others shield against adverse weather such as sun and rain.

Studies reveal that one of the major causes of head impact injuries was the absence of a hard hat or helmet. Therefore, the Occupational Safety and Health Standard, Personal Protective Equipment, makes it mandatory for workers to be protected against any potential head injuries.

A Hard hat or Helmet has a shell and a suspension system, which absorbs any impact shocks while the design ensures the user's head is at a safe distance from the shell. The hat also prevents splashes, drips, and/ or spills from touching your scalp while the hat rim keeps spills out of your eyes. These can be used with other PPE such as compatible face shields, goggles, and hearing protection.
